For a Very Good Reason Indeed&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The German island of R\u00fcgen in the Baltic Sea. On the picturesque sandy beaches, an enormous building can be seen. Dominant on the landscape, it&#8217;s the world&#8217;s biggest hotel. With more than 10,000 rooms, you can imagine that the amount of people coming in and out must be ridiculous, right? Well, yes. But not in the way you might think. It turns out that this hotel and beach resort known as &#8216;Proha&#8217; have never had\u00a0even\u00a0a single guest&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1692\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Deserted-Hotel-8.jpg\" alt=\"Deserted Hotel\" width=\"857\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Why? Well, because of the Nazis. Proha was built on instruction from Adolf Hitler. Building started in 1936 and it was just about to be completed in 1939 when World War 2 kicked off and work was halted. Money, manpower and attention was diverted to the war effort.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1685\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Deserted-Hotel-1.jpg\" alt=\"Deserted Hotel\" width=\"905\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seventy years on and the giant hotel still stands. Untouched, unloved and ignored. It&#8217;s found in a large\u00a0bay between the Sassnitz and Binz regions, known as the Prorer Wiek.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1686\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Deserted-Hotel-2.jpg\" alt=\"Deserted Hotel\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The behemoth hotel is 3 miles\/5 km wide! And is approximately 500 feet\/150 metres from the beach.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1687\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Deserted-Hotel-3.jpg\" alt=\"Deserted Hotel\" width=\"905\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There were more than 9,000 construction workers working on this thing when it was being built. That&#8217;s how enormous it is.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1688\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Deserted-Hotel-4.jpg\" alt=\"Deserted Hotel\" width=\"905\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It has\u00a0eight <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydigest.com\/is-it-worth-buying-or-renting-in-2025\/\">housing<\/a> blocks, a\u00a0theater, cinema, massive swimming pools and even a festival hall. All abandoned and unused.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1689\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Deserted-Hotel-5.jpg\" alt=\"Deserted Hotel\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s had some use, though. During the war, when the Allies were bombing Hamburg, many Germans hid out there for <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydigest.com\/the-story-of-iryna-zarutska\/\">safety<\/a>. It was also a base for the East German military for a short time in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1690\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/08\/Deserted-Hotel-6.jpg\" alt=\"Deserted Hotel\" width=\"905\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s not totally depressing.\u00a0After decades\u00a0of debate and argument, the plan is now to turn Prora into a real\u00a0holiday resort.
