But there&#8217;s a darker side to it too. Sexually-transmitted infections and diseases we all know about. From the relatively common and not-too-worrying like chlamydia, to the dangerous and scary like syphilis. But did you know that there&#8217;s an STD out there that can make you up to 32 times more likely to develop <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dailydigest.com\/explosive-rise-in-colon-cancer-tied-to-bacterial-toxin-found-in-tainted-salad-experts-warn\/\">cancer<\/a><\/strong><\/em>&#8230;?<\/p>\n<p>Human papillomavirus is the most common viral infection of the human reproductive tract. Known as &#8216;<em><strong>HPV<\/strong><\/em>&#8216;, it&#8217;s a\u00a0common and extremely\u00a0contagious infection. One which more than 80% of sexually active women and 50% of active men will acquire at some time in their lives, according to the UK&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/chq\/Pages\/2346.aspx?CategoryID=118&amp;SubCategoryID=125\" target=\"_blank\">National Health Service<\/a>. <em><strong>HPV<\/strong><\/em> is the\u00a0name given to a group of viruses that can affect your skin and the moist membranes which line your body. In such areas as the anus, cervix, mouth and throat.<\/p>\n<p>But the worst part? HPV causes abnormal tissue and cell growth. And what does that mean? Well, in many cases &#8211; <em><strong>cancer<\/strong><\/em>. Cervical, penile, anal, testicular, oral&#8230; The list is long. And worrying. And the crazy part? So few people know about it.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2782\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Cancer-HPV-1.jpg\" alt=\"Cancer HPV \" width=\"1299\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Contracting the human papillomavirus isn&#8217;t a <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wrestling-legend-hulk-hogan-dies-at-71\/\">death<\/a> sentence, however. Many people contract it through bodily contact with an infected person and it either lies dormant or only shows itself in the appearance of harmless, if slightly unsightly warts. Either on the hands, fingers and mouth as the dreaded genital wart&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2783\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Cancer-HPV-2.jpg\" alt=\"Cancer HPV \" width=\"902\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mediacentre\/factsheets\/fs380\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">World Health Organization <\/a>(WHO):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Most people will contract it in their lives, though most people&#8217;s will clear naturally within two years.<\/li>\n<li>Not all <em><strong>HPV<\/strong><\/em> is spread through penetrative sex. Petting can be enough.<\/li>\n<li>Cervical cancer is easily the most common HPV-related disease out there. In fact, almost all cases of <em><strong>cervical cancer<\/strong><\/em> attributable to an HPV infection.<\/li>\n<li>There are more than a hundred\u00a0types of HPV. 13 of which are cancer causing (these are known as high risk types).<\/li>\n<li>Intercourse early in life and smoking has been known to increase HPV sufferers&#8217; chance of getting cervical cancer.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2785\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/HPV-Cancer.gif\" alt=\"Cancer HPV \" width=\"942\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Vaccination<\/strong><\/em> against HPV is available and is recommended before a person becomes sexually active. The vaccines cannot, of course, treat HPV itself or any of its associated cancers.\u00a0Clinical trial results have shown that the main\u00a0vaccines available are safe and particularly\u00a0effective in preventing infection.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2795\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/HPV.jpg\" alt=\"HPV\" width=\"847\" height=\"696\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wall Street and Fatal Attraction actor <em><strong>Michael Douglas<\/strong><\/em> famously attributed his throat cancer to HPV and, specifically, going down on his wife&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2786\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Michael-Douglas.jpg\" alt=\"Cancer HPV \" width=\"1065\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In an interview with British newspaper The Guardian back in 2011, he said this about his <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydigest.com\/lsd-microdosing\/\">illness<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Without wanting to get too specific, this particular cancer is caused by HPV, which actually comes about from cunnilingus.\u00a0<\/em><em>I did <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydigest.com\/lsd-microdosing\/\">worry<\/a> if the stress caused by my son\u2019s incarceration didn\u2019t help trigger it. But yeah, it\u2019s a <strong>sexually transmitted disease<\/strong> that causes <strong>cancer<\/strong>. And if you have it, cunnilingus is also the best cure for it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2784\" src=\"http:\/\/dailydigest.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Cancer-HPV-3.jpg\" alt=\"Cancer HPV\" width=\"955\" height=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The US-based <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/about-cancer\/causes-prevention\/risk\/infectious-agents\/hpv-fact-sheet\" target=\"_blank\">National Cancer Institute<\/a> has this to say about prevention of HPV:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The most effective way to guard completely against contracting HPV is to remain abstinent and refrain for any sexual contact whatsoever. That&#8217;s not much fun though, is it?<\/li>\n<li>Wearing a condom can cut down on the chance of catching it.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t start sexual activity until you&#8217;re a fully physically mature.<\/li>\n<li>Keep the number of sexual partners limited. The bigger the number, the bigger the risk.<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dailydigest.com\/top-10-foods-to-boost-your-immune-system-naturally\/\">Food<\/a> and Drug Administration (<a class=\"definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000454786&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">FDA<\/a>) have approved 3\u00a0vaccines to prevent HPV spreading &#8211;\u00a0<a class=\"definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000661954&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\">Gardasil\u00ae<\/a>, <a class=\"definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000767621&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\" target=\"_blank\">Gardasil\u00ae 9<\/a>, and <a class=\"definition\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cancer.gov\/Common\/PopUps\/popDefinition.aspx?id=CDR0000658364&amp;version=Patient&amp;language=English\" target=\"_blank\">Cervarix\u00ae<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>While many medical experts and bodies encourage vaccination, it&#8217;s important to conduct your own research on the procedure, it&#8217;s efficacy and the potential hazards and side effects before sending your child for the jab.
